Fifteen Years of the Perfect Catch! Ocean Basket Delivers On Its Promise

“Nkosi, sikelel’ iOcean Basket,” the restaurant chain that brought an exceptional offering to a nation of seafood lovers!

Fifteen years ago, only a privileged minority could enjoy the ocean’s tasty harvest at its freshest, at the coast. But in April 1995, Ocean Basket achieved a miracle for the seafood aficionado’s constitution by launching the first of its restaurants. And that was in Menlyn, Pretoria.

Immediately, the foodie electorate began voting with their feet, and the restaurant was a landslide success. Residents queued from early morning to cast their vote for the catch of the day, delicious prawns, scrumptious calamari and everything else on the Ocean Basket menu of promises.

Delivery was key, and customers were won over by the simplicity, value and - above all - seafood quality. Ocean Basket, the sole provider, delivered on its promises, always, from day one!

Architects of this long awaited development were brothers Fats and George Lazarides, with George Nichas. Fats, George and George had started a new revolution. They quickly initiated rolling mass action, bringing Ocean Basket restaurants to more and more previously disadvantaged seafood desperado’s across the nation. Today, there are 126 Ocean Baskets, not just in South Africa but in Southern Africa and Europe too.

Today, there is even an Ocean Basket in Paphos on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, where Fats, George and George have their gourmet roots. Lusaka, Windhoek, Swakopmund, Livingstone - the spread of seafood democracy is unstoppable.

After all wherever there is an Ocean Basket, enthusiastic supporters enjoy mouth-watering Mediterranean starters and main courses of superbly fresh calamari, kingklip, line fish, sole, and prawns, all served with crisp fries, rice or salad. There are also platters and combinations like fish and calamari, prawns and calamari, prawns and kingklip, and so on. Delicious Nile Perch too, because it’s what the people want!

Many Ocean Baskets have a sushi menu - sushi/nigiri, sashimi, maki, hand rolls, fashion sandwiches, rainbow rolls, California rolls, a sashimi platter and a salmon platter.

The ever-growing success of Ocean Basket depends largely on its unwavering insistence on delivery of that original election promise of simple, quality seafood plus value for money. Absolute commitment explains the many awards Ocean Basket has won. They include the Leisure Options ‘Best seafood in Johannesburg’ award for the past 10 years in a row and The Star’s ‘Reader’s Choice: Best seafood restaurant’ for the past five years in a row.

Ocean Basket’s website is popular, too, as it is informative and practical: www.oceanbasket.com.

Ocean Basket, has always delivered what gets seafood lovers’ vote, year in, year out, for fifteen successful years.
